You must provide the following for birth, death & marriage records:

• EXACT name as it appears on the record (first, middle, last)
• EXACT place (city)
• EXACT date (month day year)
• mother's maiden name
• father's name (when recorded)
It can take up to 4 months to get a vital record from New Jersey. If you're willing to pay by credit card, for an additional fee you can order online (this may not apply to genealogy requests).

The $10.00 fee will cover a search of up to five consecutive years between May 1, 1848 to May 31, 1878 for each requested record. Each additional block of five consecutive years searched at the same time will cost another $10.00. For marriage records between 1848 and 1864, the county the marriage took place in is required.

Contact the registrar of the municipality if you know the place of the birth, death or marriage. Otherwise, requests should be directed to the State Registrar or State Archives.

Divorce records for 1900-1989 are kept by the Records Information Center of the State Superior Court. For records after 1989 contact the NJ County Court that issued the divorce decree.
